PaludiAllianz

Establishing scalable value chains with paludiculture biomass from rewetted peatlands

The implementation of paludiculture in Germany is gaining momentum, with promising pilot projects starting up across the country. The PaludiAllianz aims to scale up these projects by boosting demand and integrating them into value chains.

Under the umbrella of the toMOORow Initiative of the Michael Otto Foundation (UMO) and the Michael Succow Foundation (MSS), partners in the Greifswald Mire Centre (GMC), commercial enterprises have joined forces to form the PaludiAllianz (Paludiculture Alliance) to promote the use of biomass and fibres from paludiculture in their value chains. To support the alliance, the “PaludiAllianz” project was developed under the direction of UMO together with MSS and the University of Greifswald, which is funded by BMEL/FNR. Through the development of new value chains and knowledge transfer by the project partners, biomass producers are networked with commercial enterprises.

Comprehensive and large-scale peatland protection can only succeed if it is combined with productive use of wet peatland sites. Paludiculture, the use of biomass from wet peatlands, is one such sustainable use. The PaludiAllianz works from both sides of the value chain: on the one hand, the demand for paludi-biomass is promoted by the processing industry, while on the other hand, the economic interest of farmers is strengthened by a developing paludiculture market.

As part of the long-term toMOORow initiative, the Michael Succow Foundation is working together with the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection and the University of Greifswald on a pioneering project for the use of biomass from rewetted peatlands in Germany. The aim of the PaludiAllianz is to support the development of innovative products from paludiculture biomass by connecting agricultural producers and companies. The aim is to develop scalable value chains that make a significant contribution to peatland and climate protection.
