The comparatively new tool introduced by IUCN to assess the management effectiveness of protected and conserved areas has been applied in two protected areas in Uzbekistan.
Together with the Institute of Zoology of Uzbekistan the Succow Foundation digged deep into management performance of both desert protected areas Saigachy Landscape Reserve and Southern Ustyurt National Park. Both are at the same time component parts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cold Winter Deserts of Turan. Aim of the exercise was to benchmark the performance and needs of the project pilot sites at the beginning of the recently started project One Health in nature conservation in Central Asia. Thus, tailored measures to support the protected areas with trainings and equipment shall be developed. And at the same time, the assessments shall give an understanding about a measurable and internationally recognised impact of the project.
The One Health project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of German Government. The project is coordinated by the IUCN and implemented together with a consortium of national and international partners, supported by political institutions from all five Central Asian countries.
