The conference took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, 5-6 March 2025 and was hosted by the Institute of Zoology of Kazakhstan. Over 50 scientists, staff of nature conservation governmental structures and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), protected areas, specialists in the field of agriculture and land-use working from all five Central Asian countries participated in the event.
The aim of the conference was to share experiences and successful practices for human-wildlife conflicts. Such conflicts often lead to economic losses and threaten wildlife populations if protective measures are not taken. Sustainable solutions are needed to balance the needs of both sides.
Topics of the conference included human-wild ungulates conflicts, human-wild predatory mammals conflict, legislative bases of conflict resolution, modern approaches to human-wildlife conflict resolution as well as interaction of protected area staff with local communities to resolve human-wildlife conflicts.
The results of the conference will be published in conference proceedings.
The conference was jointly organized by the Michael Succow Foundation, the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) and the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the framework of the regional program Integrative and Climate-sensitive Land Use in Central Asia (ILUCA) implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Government.
